Day 1 – 20.9.2027

Arrival in Abuja, the capital of Nigeria. Airport transfer to the hotel and check-in. The rest of the day is free to rest after the flight or explore the city at your own pace.

Due to flight timetables, you may need to arrive in Abuja as early as 19 September, which means you’ll have the first day off.

Day 2 – 21.9.2027

During the day, we’ll explore Abuja’s main attractions. Highlights of the trip include the impressive Zuma Rock, a granite hill rising almost 800 metres above its surroundings and considered one of Nigeria’s most famous natural landmarks. The tour continues to the beautiful Gurara Falls, which are a particularly spectacular sight after the rainy season. To round off the day, we’ll also take a tour of Abuja, a young city that was only chosen as the country’s capital in the 1970s to replace Lagos, which had grown out of control. Abuja is as different from Lagos as night is from day – the city is neat and tidy, and its town plan was designed by a Japanese architect.

Day 3 – 22.9.2027

After breakfast, we set off for Uromi, which is situated in Edo State. During the long drive, we’ll see the Nigerian countryside, small villages and agricultural landscapes. In the evening (or the following morning), there’ll be an opportunity to watch a traditional local dance and music performance.

Day 4 – 23.9.2027

The journey continues to Idanre Hills, one of Nigeria’s most beautiful landscapes, which is set to be inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List thanks to its cultural significance – the area is home to numerous shrines, burial mounds and the palace of the Owa, or local king.

Day 5 – 24.9.2027

In the morning, we’ll drive to Osogbo. There’s plenty of cultural interest there too, as we visit the sacred grove of Osun-Osogbo, situated on the banks of the Osun River in Osogbo. The grove is part of a primeval forest, of which there is not much left in Nigeria. The grove is home to Osun, the Yoruba goddess of fertility. Within the grove, we’ll see numerous shrines, altars, sculptures and other works of art dedicated to Osun and other Yoruba deities. We will also have the opportunity to meet priests and priestesses of the Yoruba religion, who act as intermediaries between the gods and living people. The priests and priestesses are able to cure illnesses, help women suffering from infertility and predict the future. Susanne Wenger, an Austrian woman who passed away in 2009 and lived in Nigeria for decades, was one of the priestesses of the Yoruba religion, and we will visit her house.

The sacred grove is an important part of the Yoruba identity. With a population of 49 million, the Yoruba are the largest ethnic group in Nigeria. Every year in August, a festival brings thousands of people together in the sacred groove.

Day 6 – 25.9.2027

Today we are invited to the fourth largest city in the world and the largest in Africa, the huge city of 26 million people, Lagos! Lagos was formed on the shores of the Gulf of Guinea, alongside lagoons and islands – out of control, which led to the city losing its capital status to Abuja.

Traffic in Lagos is always more or less congested due to its ‘unfortunate’ location and, in particular, its massive population. We hope to arrive in the city after a drive of around 4–5 hours, after which we’ll visit Makoko’s ‘floating slum’, which has also been called the ‘Venice of Africa’, as it is partly built on stilts in the middle of a lagoon and people in the slum mainly get around by boat.

Whilst in Lagos, we’ll also visit, for example, the bustling markets found all over the city. Depending on the traffic situation, we’ll choose between Balogun, Apongbo or Idumota. There are other places to visit as well, provided the traffic situation allows.

From Lagos, we’ll continue to the coastal village of Badagry for the night.

Day 7 – 26.9.2027

We’ll drive about 20 kilometres to the Benin border and then cross into a new country! From the border, we’ll continue for about 1.5 hours to the town of Abomey-Calavi, north of Cotonou. At the town’s harbour, we board a wooden boat known as a pirogue, which takes us to the village of Ganvié, situated in the middle of the lake. Ganvié is built on stilts, and people get around by boat. The inhabitants originally moved to the middle of the lake around 400 years ago to escape slave traders.

We will return to Cotonou later. Cotonou is the commercial centre of Benin and home to around 700,000 Beninese. However, the metropolitan area is home to as many as two million people. Cotonou is not, however, the capital; that honour goes to the smaller city of Porto-Novo, situated a short distance to the east.

We’ll explore Cotonou on a city tour, during which we’ll see various monuments, the red-and-white Catholic cathedral and Dantokpa Market, which is known as West Africa’s largest open-air market.

Day 8 – 27.9.2027

Today we’ll make a short journey to Cotonou Airport, from where we’ll fly either on an Asky Airlines flight via Lomé or on a Camair flight via Libreville to Douala, Cameroon’s largest city.

Day 9 – 28.9.2027

In the morning, we’ll explore Douala, Cameroon’s largest city and its most important port city. Places to visit may include the historic district of Bonanjon and the La Nouvelle Liberté monument.

After the city tour, we’ll drive along the coast to Kribi, one of Central Africa’s best-known beach resorts.

Today’s drive will take about 3 hours.

Day 10 – 29.9.2027

A whole day to enjoy Kribi's tropical sandy beaches and relaxed atmosphere. We'll also visit the spectacular Lobé Waterfalls, where the river flows directly into the Atlantic Ocean – a phenomenon that is rare anywhere in the world.

Day 11 – 30.9.2027

After breakfast, we’ll return to Douala. We may make a few short stops along the way before arriving at the airport and beginning our journey home.
