Located off the coast of Africa in the Gulf of Guinea, the island nation of São Tomé and Príncipe is a tiny country (1,001 km²). Consisting of two main islands, São Tomé and Príncipe, the country is located on the equator, and its closest neighbours on the African continent are Gabon and Equatorial Guinea to the east, and Cameroon to the northeast, all located approximately 250–300 kilometres away. The islands are remnants of an ancient volcanic chain, which is why they are mountainous. The country has a population of about 220,000, and the capital is São Tomé, located on the main island. The country gained independence from Portugal in 1975, and as a remnant of the colonial era, the official language is Portuguese. English is not widely spoken. The local population earns its living mainly from agriculture, such as cocoa cultivation. In addition, the oil industry brings income to the country. Tourism is growing.
