The vast Republic of Chad in the middle of Africa is a mosaic of more than 200 tribes and over 100 languages. Christians live in the south and the landscape is lush and tropical. The north is Islamic and perhaps the most beautiful wilderness in the world – rugged Sahara from endless dunes to the towering cliffs of Ennedi, dotted with palm-fringed oases. But all this takes a lot of time and we know that not everyone has it. This short tour might be just for you, and instead of requiring days of travel, you'll see a good glimpse of diverse Chad even in a four-day visit to the country! Safely, with your own guide and by private car.
If you are visiting in September or October, we can take you to see the colourful Guerewol ceremony (pictured above) about 100 kilometres south-east of N'Djamena. In that case, the journey will be extended by a night or, preferably, two.
Day 1
Arrival in N'Djamena, the capital of Chad, where we will stay overnight.
Day 2
After breakfast, we travel to the village of Gaoui, about half an hour's drive east of N'Djamena. Gaoui is the capital of the ancient Sao civilisation, where we will explore the magnificent mud-brick architecture. We will also visit the historic sultan's palace and museum.
In the afternoon, we explore N'Djamena with a city tour. We will see at least the Grand Mosque, the colonial Catholic cathedral, the National Museum and the colourful market place. We will stay overnight in N'Djamena.
Day 3
After breakfast, we drive about 120 km north of N'Djamena, where we see the huge rock formation known as the "Elephant Rock" (French: "Rocher des éléphants"). The harsh weather conditions in the region have shaped the rock into an elephant's form. Nearby are villages inhabited by the Mbororo people and if you visit nearby during or after the rainy season, you will see a large number of pastoralists. We return to N'Djamena for the night.
Day 4
We will take you back to the airport. Unless you want to continue your journey to the rugged landscapes of Ennedi or the oasis lakes of Ounianga in northern Chad. Ask us more!
