Burundi, located in East Africa, is small in size (27,834 km²). The country is located between Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Tanzania. This country on the shores of Lake Tanganyika has a population of about 13 million, and its capital is Gitega. However, the largest city by far is Bujumbura, with half a million inhabitants. The country gained independence from Belgium in 1962, and as a remnant of the colonial era, the official language is French. Kirundi also has official status, and English is spoken to varying degrees. Burundi is an agricultural country, known especially for its coffee. Tourism is minimal.
Climate: Burundi is located entirely in the tropics, which means fairly high temperatures and high humidity throughout the year. However, differences in altitude greatly affect temperatures; in the central highlands, the average annual temperature is +21 °C, and at night the temperature regularly drops below +15 °C. In lower-lying areas, such as Bujumbura, the temperature is slightly higher. The highlands of Burundi receive 1,500–1,800 mm of rainfall annually, while the shores of Lake Tanganyika receive only about 1,000 mm per year. Burundi has a dry season from May to August.
Security: The security situation in Burundi is generally good, but there are pickpockets in crowds, and the northwestern part of the country should be avoided, as should the border region with the Democratic Republic of Congo. Traffic and heat are the biggest risks. You must ask permission before taking photographs. Do not photograph the authorities.
Visa: Westerners need a visa to enter Burundi. The easiest way is to apply for an e-visa, which takes a few days to process. If you wish, you can also obtain a visa upon arrival at Bujumbura Airport. Please note that visa requirements change frequently and without prior notice. Your passport must be valid for at least six months from the date of arrival and have at least one page free for the Burundi visa.
Currency: Burundi uses the Burundian franc (BIF) as its currency. It is advisable to take euro or dollar notes with you and exchange them at your destination or withdraw currency from an ATM.
Vaccinations and malaria: Burundi requires proof of yellow fever vaccination. Hepatitis A and B vaccinations are also recommended. Please ensure that your basic vaccinations are up to date. Malaria is present throughout Burundi all year round, so it is advisable to obtain anti-malarial medication. Protection against mosquitoes during the day is also recommended due to the risk of dengue fever.
Travel insurance: Comprehensive travel insurance is strongly recommended.
