Situated on the Atlantic coast, on both sides of the equator, Congo-Brazzaville, officially the Republic of Congo, is pretty much the size (342 000 km²) of Germany or Finland. The population of this Central African country is around 6 million and the capital Brazzaville is located on the Congo River in the south of the country. The country gained independence from French rule in 1960 and, as a colonial legacy, the official language is French. English is poorly spoken. Oil-rich Congo generates more than 60% of its income from oil in its various forms, but mining (copper) also provides a living for a large number of people, as does forestry. Tourism is almost non-existent.
Climate: Congo-Brazzaville has an equatorial climate, which means high temperatures and high humidity all year round. In the north of the country, north of the equator, the dry season lasts from November to March and the rainy season from April to October. In the south of the equator, the reverse is true. Rainfall is high across the country. Temperatures remain fairly constant throughout the year, with average temperatures of +20–30°C. The average humidity is 80 %.
Security: The security situation in Congo-Brazzaville is generally good, but there are pickpockets in the crowds. Traffic and heat are the main risk factors.
Visa: Westerners need a visa to enter Congo-Brazzaville. We recommend obtaining a visa in advance from the nearest Congolese embassy. Please note that visa policies are subject to change without notice. The passport must be valid throughout your stay in the country.
