Highlights of Cameroon

Highlights of Cameroon, 6 days

Cameroon is sometimes described as a Central African country, sometimes as a West African country. In reality, it is a diverse mix of both and is called ‘Africa in miniature’! It has almost everything Africa has to offer. On this short tour, we will scratch the surface of diverse Cameroon as we explore its southern parts to see royal castles, waterfalls, rainforest, rich culture and two African metropoles, Douala and Yaoundé.

This tour can also start and end in Yaoundé.

Day 1

Arrival in Douala, Cameroon's biggest city. Accommodation in a hotel of your preferred level.

Day 2

Douala, located in the Wouri River Delta, is Cameroon's biggest city and economic capital. We will start with a city tour of Douala, including a visit to the central market and the historic Bonandjo district, which showcases colonial architecture. We will visit the city's most important monuments, such as King Bell's Palace, La Pagode, built by the Germans in 1905, and the charming Byzantine-style Saint Pierre et Paul Cathedral. We will also visit the Maritime Museum and learn about the maritime history of Douala. After lunch, we can take a motorised canoe to Wouri River and visit the historic island of Djebale. Return to Douala in the evening.

Accommodation: in Douala

Day 3

After breakfast, we head north to visit the picturesque Ekom waterfalls (80 metres high) in a pristine primeval forest. We continue our journey to the territory of the Bamileke tribe; the largest ethnic group in Cameroon. They are organised into chiefdoms, with the chief being considered the spiritual, political, legal and military leader. We will visit the Kingdom of Bapa, home to the Royal Palace and Museum. We continue to Bangou, where we stay overnight.

Day 4

Today we head to Foumban, home of the Bamouns and the capital of their sultanate. It was founded in the 13th century and is one of the oldest towns in Cameroon. We will explore the town and visit the beautiful early 20th century royal palace. We will visit the Sultanate's market, one of the most colourful in Cameroon, and walk through the artisans' quarter, one of the best places in Central Africa to buy wooden carvings. On the way back, we will stop at the Métché Falls, also an important pilgrimage site.

In the evening we arrive in Bafoussam, where we stay overnight.

Day 5

After breakfast, we drive to Batoufam and visit the Royal Palace. From here we continue our journey to the capital Yaoundé, stopping several times along the way to admire the scenery, among other things. Accommodation in Yaoundé.
